In our special spring New Mills Lecture at Providence Peter Oakes invites us to visualise first-century people – their lives, loves and struggles. In doing so he sheds fresh light on the texts written for them in The New Testament. Peter Oakes is an internationally renowned scholar who uses Greco-Roman sources and social scientific methods to explore the New Testament as it hit the ground. He is Professor of New Testament and Co-Director of the Centre for Biblical Studies at the University of Manchester, Editor of the Journal for the Study of the New Testament Booklist and a member of the editorial board of New Testament Studies. Publications include Philippians: From People to Letter (Cambridge University Press 2001), Reading Romans in Pompeii: Paul's Letter at Ground Level (Augsberg Fortress 2009), Galatians (Grand Rapids 2015) and his latest book Empire, Economics, and the New Testament (Eerdmans) is due to be published later this year.
